More than fifteen years
ago, during my first experience as a freelance junior
developer, a customer of mine used to tell me stories about
what he described as the 'epic period' of information
technology (up to 10-15 years before).
His masterpiece was
remembering the 'ceremony' to create an expert. At
that time IT was considered like a 'mysterious discipline'.
When a new software or technology were released and nobody knew
anything about that it was a good practice to choose the
newbiest boy of the team and invest him with the authority of
the 'new expert of that matter'! It could seem a great
honour but it wasn't. There weren't Internet, developer
communities, technical resources, extensive bibliography
neither affordable training courses or skilled collegues. It
was just the way to discharge a new problem on the shoulder of
the youngest collegue.
I also was sometimes
'victim' of this practice in the next years, but I considered
that a chance instead of a problem.
Nowadays that kind of
approach is overcame. IT is one of the most thrusting sector of
global economy with million of people involved in.
Competence, updating, high professionality is a decisive
contribute to the quality, low cost and rapid software
development. Knowledge is not only a feature. Knowledge is
the key.
